Cyberpunk 2077 is arguably the most anticipated game of the PS4 and Xbox One generation. The wait for the game has been agonising thanks to numerous delays and the fact that your Sims can now play the game via mods while you have to wait. Seeing as its launch is (hopefully) on the horizon, lots of people are unsure and thus asking: will Cyberpunk 2077 be multiplayer? With Cyberpunk 2077 being available on current-gen systems, those who make the transition to next-gen can expect a free upgrade in 2021. The game will run and look better at launch on the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but all of the next-gen upgrades won’t arrive until sometime next year.
But, regardless of which platform you plan to play the game on in December, below you’ll discover whether there will be multiplayer.
Is Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer?
Cyberpunk 2077 is not multiplayer at launch.
Although Cyberpunk 2077 is not multiplayer at launch on December 10th, the ability to play with friends will be added in the future.
This makes the game very much alike GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 which both launched as single-player games only.
However, you will need to wait much longer for multiplayer to be added to Cyberpunk 2077 compared to both of the Rockstar titles mentioned above.
When is the multiplayer release date for Cyberpunk 2077?
There is no multiplayer release date for Cyberpunk 2077.
But, while there’s no release date, CD Projekt RED has suggested that there will not be multiplayer in Cyberpunk 2077 until at least 2022.
This is because the ability to play with friends will be its own AAA release as per a Q&A call between CD Projekt RED and analysts and investors.
Below you’ll find what CD Projekt RED’s head of publishing, Michal Nowakowski, told investors back in January 2020 (via Gamesradar):
“In terms of multiplayer, one thing we need to make clear is the triple-A release we’re working on in parallel with CP2077 is Cyberpunk multiplayer.
Given the expected release of Cyberpunk 2077 in September, and frankly speaking the series of events which we expect to occur after that date, 2021 appears unlikely as a release date for the Cyberpunk multiplayer.”
The above information is slightly out of date as the base game is now launching in December, but 2022 and beyond is when fans should expect something perhaps similar to GTA Online.
