After showing off Halo MCC’s previously unreleased armour and helmets, 343 Industries posted some Halo Infinite goodies, focusing on the game’s multiplayer skins and the coating system.
Now, the coating system, which is 343’s official name for the skin system, probably deserves its name as we’re talking about a pretty complex system that far transcends the simplistic skin application systems of old.
“From the beginning, ‘player expression’ has been a key pillar of Halo Infinite and to achieve these goals, the team has developed a new system which is a powerful and flexible way to create customization content quicker and more robustly than we’ve been able to in the past. According to Lead Player Investment Designer, Christopher Blohm, a “coating” is “a seven-layer shader that allows us to put any artist-authored color, material, or pattern into seven channels and apply it to in-game items like weapons, armor, and vehicles.”“, the dev wrote.
Blohm stressed the vehicle part, and you can check out one example of Warthog skins below, and reminded that the previous colour system may have worked well, but is nowhere near the coating system in terms of breadth and scope of customisation options. Colouration, materials and patterns will be baked into the coating, so the previous primary/secondary colour system is going bye-bye.
343 also pointed out that criticising the earlier armour renders for being too clean or looking plasticky is a bit unfounded, as they were showing work-in-progress renders.
“While we are very excited about the return to a more classic Halo art-style, we do want to acknowledge that the nature of these work-in-progress renders is such that they aren’t completely representing the base material as shown in-game with ‘real’ lighting. Additionally, as you can see with Red Shift above, the overall look will also depend on the design style of each specific armor coating“, they wrote.
