CD Projekt prepares for the release of its newest game, Cyberpunk 2077, by giving out The Witcher, its very first game, for free to GOG Galaxy users.
CD Projekt has made The Witcher: Enhanced Edition free on its digital distribution platform, GOG Galaxy. The roleplaying action game based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novel series was released back in 2007. The game’s Enhanced Edition, which improved animations, character models and translated dialogue, was released in 2008.
CD Projekt is a video game developer and distributor, known for developing the Witcher games series as well as the GOG digital distribution platform. GOG was originally intended for the distribution of classic computer games DRM-free, but the site has now grown to distribute modern games as well. Recently Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn launched on GOG, making it the first-ever PlayStation console exclusive to launch on the platform. Players are given many incentives to purchase games through GOG, particularly games developed by CD Projekt Red such as the Witcher games and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077. Those who purchase Cyberpunk 2077 on GOG will receive an exclusive 50-page digital comic which will expand the game’s futuristic setting of Night City.

CD Projekt has announced that all GOG Galaxy users will receive a free copy of The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, provided they sign up for the GOG newsletter. In order to receive their free copy of the game, users must download the GOG Galaxy launcher and agree to receive news, updates, and offers. After doing so, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition will be automatically added to the user’s game library.
While CD Projekt Red ensures that all GOG users have access to the developer’s very first title, its newest game approaches release. The developer has recently implored gamers to avoid spoiling Cyberpunk 2077 for others by waiting until after the game’s December 10 release date to begin releasing gameplay footage. This appeal to the game’s fanbase was likely inspired by instances of gamers receiving the game ahead of its official release. Copies of Cyberpunk 2077 have reportedly been sold early by Best Buy, which has already begun sending out copies of the game’s Collector’s Edition ahead of launch day.
CD Projekt has demonstrated a commitment to distributing classic games DRM-free and at a fair price. With more than a decade since its original release, The Witcher: Enhanced Edition certainly qualifies as a classic and highly influential title. With Cyberpunk 2077‘s final release date less than a week away, it is only appropriate that CD Projekt should celebrate its very first video game release.
